Never have I been challenged in every possible aspect of my life – emotionally, mentally, physically and technically!
By chance, I met Jacques, the most positive and inspirational person I have come across. 4 years ago, he was in a horrific motorcycle accident that changed his life forever. He was 6 months hospitalised and was left with a very short above-knee residual limb. Many professionals have turned him away, and I was on the verge of doing so.
I must emphasise the invaluable assistance of my colleague Marco Du Plooy, whose efforts were instrumental. Additionally, we built upon the extensive work previously done by Barkley and Oats. After a week of dedicated effort, we achieved a socket fit that is stable, snug, and comfortable, making it possible for Jacques to walk and control his prosthesis. We worked late at night, did fit after fit, and gave up one evening late at night.
Jacques is a practical and creative person, and he provided great input with his ideas and advice. The result was due to working with Marco Du Plooy, using work from Barkley and Oats, and listening to my amputee. I feel we achieved the impossible, and Jacques’s extreme motivation to walk again made it all possible.
Jacques, this was a life-changing event for me, and I have learned a great deal again about socket design and fighting for what seems to be impossible. I am so grateful that our paths have crossed, and I believe you will improve daily!
Thank you so much for the opportunity and your amazing heart!
