I have known Divan Engelbrecht since he lost his leg at just 16 after a motorbike accident, and over the years he has become much more than a patient to me. He is one of those people who seems to have a permanent smile and a wonderfully relaxed, everything-is-going-to-be-okay attitude.
I recently had the privilege of doing a trans-tibial refit for him, including fitting new silicone liners. The liner sits directly against the residual limb, providing cushioning and helping create a secure connection between the limb and prosthetic socket.
As the residual limb changes over time, the old fit can become less comfortable or secure. A refit allows me to reassess the socket, suspension and overall interface so the prosthesis feels right again.
