The loss of a limb will drastically alter the way an individual moves and how they navigate life. This means it’s imperative to do a lot of preparation both mentally and physically, and then to go through rigorous rehabilitation from pre-prosthetic fitting to post-prosthetic fitting and for a period thereafter until the patient feels confident.
Stages of Amputee Preparation and Rehabilitation
This will provide a brief guide on the preparation and rehabilitation process that an amputee has to undergo.
Pre-operative Preparation
In this stage, the prosthetist will assess the patient’s body condition and their needs. They will discuss procedures and options with the patient to ensure that they can make a well-informed decision regarding the next steps in the process.
Post-surgery Rehabilitation
This is the stage after surgery, where the patient’s wound and pain levels will be monitored and attended to. They will also be supported emotionally in this stage, as this stage can be emotional and overwhelming.
Pre-prosthetic Preparation
Once the wound has healed sufficiently, the prosthetist will prepare the residual limb for the prosthetic that will work for the patient. This preparation includes increasing muscle strength where necessary, shrinking the residual limb and ensuring there is no more swelling. The prosthetic will be prescribed shortly after this process.
Prosthetic Training and Physio
The prosthetist and physio therapist will assist with getting used to the prosthetic, teaching movement, aiding in balance and motion.
Patients will be followed up with regularly to ensure that they are coping both physically and mentally. For prosthetic and orthotic fittings and advice, contact our expert team!
