“Your life can change in an instant. That instant can last forever.” – Laura Kasischke
This instant happened for Steyn Steenberg on the 12th of May 2019, when a motorcycle accident claimed his leg. The story made the news, and the community and his school joined hands to help with funding where they could.
After Steyn’s accident, there were eight months of ups and downs to contend with for both Steyn, his family and close friends. His recovery and rehabilitation required lots of encouragement and positivity, but Steyn stayed strong and his perseverance prevailed.
In between his eight months of recovery, Steyn had to undergo surgery again, which was a big turning point in his rehabilitation.
After surgery and recovery, he was on holiday in Mozambique where he had to walk on thick loose sand which, according to him, made his leg stronger!
After December, I saw Steyn again for another refit because his residual limb had lost some volume.
The day arrived with lots of smiles that Steyn finally received his final prosthesis. With teenagers being a little more daring and “wild”, they really put the components to the test, so we monitor progress carefully. Once we’re sure that they aren’t going to injure themselves further, we send them back into the world to live happy, normal lives.
Steyn, as a message from myself and my team, well done to you as a young boy who faced up to a massive challenge in your life! You have done extremely well, and we are all so proud of you!!!
Stay positive and keep on fighting!!!
