Whether you are considering speaking to your prosthetist about fitting your own artificial limb, or you’re simply a family member or friend of a recent amputee, it’s good to get clued up on the rehabilitation side of the amputation process.
With the right mindset, the loss of a limb can be seen as a golden opportunity to start a whole new adventure! All of our patients have taught us that even through the tough times, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and each of them come out shining brighter than when they went in.
This is also because our team cares deeply about each person, and assists wherever we can to ensure that the transition from amputation to artificial limb fitting is as smooth as possible.
Rehabilitation of an Amputee Includes:
Treatments to help improve wound healing and stump care
Physiotherapy and practice with the new artificial limb, along with exercises that help with control, strength and endurance
Dealing with pain through pain management
Potential psychology and emotional therapy for both amputee and close family and friends to battle new changes, and any post-amputation depression
We make sure that each of our patients is fully supported in every way possible, and that they are completely independent when their time with us comes to an end. Most of our patients will still come to visit to show off their achievements, with big smiles on their faces!
