Famous People with Prosthetics: Part 2

There are many people in the spotlight who have either lost a limb, or were born without one, and have made a massive success for themselves. These people have gone on to inspire millions with their perseverance and determination. We recently took a closer look at two famous people with prosthetics that didn’t allow anything to get in their way, and we wanted to focus on two more that have made a huge impression.

Bethany Hamilton

Bethany Hamilton was 13 years old when she was attacked by a shark while surfing just off the coast of Hawaii. The young surfer lost over 60% of blood, as well as her left arm. Today she is a brilliant professional surfer, taking on the waves without fear! She is also a proud mom of two, and gives inspirational talks that encourage people to stick with their dreams no matter what life throws at them. Her story is told in the movie Soul Surfer.

Sarah Reinertsen

Sarah Reinertsen’s story is quite different. She was born with a disorder called proximal femoral focal deficiency, which is a bone growth disorder.  When she was seven years old, they amputated her leg above her knee, and she was introduced to her first prosthetic. Sarah went on to becoming a famous Paralympic triathlete and was the first female leg amputee to complete the Ironman World Championship. She continues to compete today.
