People can suffer from many different types of knee injuries as the knee is a very complex joint with various components that are vulnerable to injuries. Knee injuries are often treated with physiotherapy, orthotics and bracing (some injuries may require surgery).
Doctor’s offices are often occupied by patients with knee injuries, especially the following types:
1. Sprains and tears
Soft tissue injuries such as ACL and meniscus tears are common knee problems caused by either awkwardly stepping or as a result of hurting the knee while playing sports.
A meniscus injury causes a moderate amount of pain and can cause difficulty when straightening the knee. ACL injuries are disabling but at times do not cause pain. As the injury occurs you may hear a popping sound.
MRIs can determine how serious the sprain or tear of the ACL or meniscus is. If the ACL is torn, surgery and a rehab program will be required.
2. Dislocation
This type of injury is extremely painful and occurs when the knee bones are, either completely or partially, out of place.
Dislocations can be caused as a result of the following reasons:
- Abnormality of the knee
- Sport related incidences
- Falls or other accidents
- Vehicle accidents
If you experience a dislocation, your doctor will have to sedate you and move your bones into the correct place where after you will have to wear an Immobilising brace and use crutches until the swelling has decreased. The doctor will then advise you on either physiotherapy or surgery depending on the severity of your injury.
3. Fractures
Many knee fractures are caused by:
- Car accidents
- Falls- mainly falls from significant heights
- Sports related incidences
People of all ages can experience a fracture. Symptoms usually include swelling, odd knee appearance, pain and difficulty mobilising the leg. Knee fractures almost always require an immobilising knee brace and crutches.
Surgery may be required if the injury is severe.
