Our patient, George Gremels was amputated on the 29th of January. We fitted him in theatre with a Post op Rigid dressing from Őssur. This dressing helps reduce swelling and can be opened to inspect the wound.

After 7 -9 days the patient was fitted with Post – Op Liners. The size of the liner is determined by the measurement of the residual limb. These liners are worn for a 6 – 9 week period, or till the volume of the residual limb has stabilized. The patient is seen once a week, measurements are taken, and as the size of the residual limb decreases, smaller liners are issued. After this period, the patient was fitted with a temporary prosthesis to reduce and shape the residual limb even more. He wore this temporary prosthesis for another 7 weeks.

16 weeks after his amputation, the patient was fitted with his 1st permanent prosthesis. These pictures show the test socket that was manufactured to inspect the fitting of the socket.

After 10 months of wearing his 1st permanent socket, we needed to do a refit, as the volume of his residual limb has decreased again. In the beginning stages of an amputation, this fluctuation in volume is troublesome. This patient was treated intensively to manage his residual limbs volume. Despite all this effort, the first socket only fitted for 10 months. For new amputees, this could be useful information, to determine the costs of prosthetics within the first year of being an amputee. With younger patients who sufferd a traumatic amputation, volume changes is more than typically seen in older patients who received an amputation due to vascular problems.
