Hope Springs Eternal

If you meet a person who is wearing hearing aids in both ears, had a schoemanright hip replacement, double knee replacements, left above elbow amputation, right below knee amputation and a left 3rd toe amputation, what would your immediate reaction be?

Most of us will expect to meet a person who has lost his or her will to live and who walks around feeling and looking depressed.  But not Mrs “tannie” Schoeman.

We had the privilege to meet and provide her with a new below knee prosthesis and her life story has brought us new perspectives.

Life is full of lessons and surprises! tiisetsoIn our profession we often come across very inspiring people, some old and some young.  But one does not think that a small child will be a huge inspiration.

What do you do if you are born with no arms and only one normal leg? If you ask Tiisetso, he will tell you: “you live life!”  If you meet Tiisetso, your first instinct is to feel sorry for him, but one is very quickly inspired by his way of life and his fantastic, friendly and positive attitude.  He is just as busy as any other fully functional six year old boy. 

He is constantly on the move and pulls a piece of paper closer to him with his one foot to draw pictures with the other, he plays games on the computer or cell phone and sucks on a lollypop held between his toes.

Tiisetso’s right leg is 6cms shorter than his left leg and his foot is in equinis (pointing downwards), hence if he wants to walk or run, he has to jump on his left leg, something he has been doing for the last six years!
